Prominent Universities in India
India has a rich history of higher education, with some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. From ancient times to the present day, India has been home to numerous institutions of higher learning that have played a significant role in shaping the country’s intellectual and cultural heritage.
According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), India has a total of 903 universities, with 47 central universities, 399 state universities, 123 deemed universities, and 334 private universities (UGC, 2020). These universities offer a wide range of academic programs, from undergraduate to doctoral levels, in fields such as engineering, medicine, law, arts, and sciences.
One of the most ancient and prominent universities in India is the Nalanda University, established in 427 CE in Bihar. This university was a major center of learning and attracted students from all over the world. Another ancient university is the Taxila University, established in the 6th century BCE in modern-day Pakistan. This university was a major center of learning and was known for its expertise in Buddhist philosophy and Sanskrit literature.
In addition to these ancient universities, India is also home to numerous modern universities that are renowned for their academic excellence. Some of the most prominent modern universities in India include the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and the National Law Schools. These universities are known for their rigorous academic programs and have produced many of India’s top leaders and professionals.
According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the top 10 universities in India are:

Some of the most prominent specialized universities in India include the National School of Drama, the Film and Television Institute of India, and the Kalakshetra Foundation. These universities are known for their expertise in their respective fields and have produced many of India’s top artists and performers.
According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), the total enrollment in higher education in India was 37.4 million in 2019-20, with 19.2 million male students and 18.2 million female students (AISHE, 2020). The survey also found that the gross enrollment ratio (GER) in higher education in India was 26.3% in 2019-20, with 27.4% for males and 25.2% for females (AISHE, 2020).
In conclusion, India is home to a rich and diverse range of universities that offer a wide range of academic programs. From ancient institutions like Nalanda University to modern private universities like Amity University, India’s universities have played a significant role in shaping the country’s intellectual and cultural heritage.
