Death of Homi Jahangir Bhabha’S Death Mystery – Boing-707

Whether the death of Dr. Homi Bhabha, the father of India’s nuclear program, was a mere plane accident or a deep conspiracy by a global superpower—this question remains unsolved even today. The historical significance of this event—Homi Jahangir Bhabha’s Death Mystery – Boeing 707 or Homi Jahangir Bhabha’s Death Mystery: India’s Nuclear Dream Buried in the Snow of Mont Blanc—is immense. On January 24, 1966, Air India Flight 101 (‘Kanchenjunga’) crashed on Mount Mont Blanc in France, killing 117 people including him. Just 13 days before this, the mysterious death of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Bhabha’s historical statement—“If India wants, it can build an atomic bomb within 18 months”—these three events together turned this incident into a vast and dark mystery of history.

When you go to Trombay and stand in front of the gate of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, you will see the bust of a man in front of a huge building. There is far sight in his eyes. There is a light smile on his lips. The name of this man is Homi Jahangir Bhabha. You know this man is called the father of India’s nuclear program. But if I tell you that the death of this man is still one of India’s biggest mysteries, will you believe it? This death did not happen in a hospital. This death did not happen on a battlefield. This death happened inside a flying aircraft, in the snow of Mont Blanc mountain in France. On January 24, 1966, Air India Flight 101, a plane named Kanchenjunga, crashed into Mont Blanc. In this accident, all 117 passengers died, among whom was India’s iconic physicist Homi Bhabha. The official explanation of this incident is pilot error. But even after 60 years, this explanation has not satisfied many. Because, just 13 days before this death, India’s Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri had died in Tashkent. And just a few months before this death, Bhabha had said on All India Radio that India could make an atomic bomb within 18 months. These three events together have woven a web of mystery that still remains unsolved.

Who was Homi Jahangir Bhabha?

Homi Jahangir Bhabha was born on October 30, 1909, in Mumbai, in a wealthy Parsi family. His father, Jahangir Hormusji Bhabha, was a famous lawyer. His mother, Meherbanu, was a relative of J. J. Tata. This family wanted Homi to become an engineer. But Homi wanted to become a physicist.

He studied at Cathedral School in Mumbai. Then he studied at Elphinstone College. In 1927, he went to the University of Cambridge. There he studied Mechanical Engineering. But his mind remained in physics. He secretly read books on mathematics and physics. In 1930, he passed the Engineering Tripos from Cambridge in first class. Then he worked with Professor Niels Bohr in Copenhagen. Then he worked with Professor Paul Dirac. During this time he did research on cosmic rays. His research was so important that in 1936 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society.

In 1945, he founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Later, he founded the Atomic Energy Establishment, which is now known as BARC. From 1950 until the day of his death, he was the first Chairman of India’s Atomic Energy Commission.

Bhabha was not just a scientist. He was a visionary. He believed that for a poor country like India, nuclear power is the future. He used to say, coal and oil will one day run out. But India has plenty of uranium and thorium. With this thorium, India can make its own electricity. To realize this dream, he built a research center in Trombay. He brought the CIRUS reactor from Canada. He sent Indian scientists abroad for training. He alone laid the foundation of India’s nuclear program.

Death of Homi Jahangir Bhabha’S Death Mystery – Boing-707

Background of India’s Nuclear Dream, Why Bhabha Was Dangerous

In 1962, India had a war with China. India was defeated in this war. After this defeat, India’s leaders understood that without military power, the country will not survive. At this time, China conducted its first nuclear test in 1964. This test made India even more worried.

After Lal Bahadur Shastri became Prime Minister, he gave Bhabha the green signal. He said, prepare to make the bomb. Bhabha seized this opportunity.

In October 1965, Bhabha gave an interview on All India Radio. He said, if India wants, it can make an atomic bomb within 18 months. This statement shook the powerful countries of the world. America at that time did not want India to acquire nuclear power. America was also more displeased seeing India leaning towards the Soviet Union.

Bhabha was going in January 1966 to Vienna to attend a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This meeting was very important for India. Because in this meeting, India would present the future plan of its nuclear program. This journey became Bhabha’s last journey.

January 24, 1966: That Terrible Morning

January 24, 1966, 7:02 am. Mont Blanc, the highest peak of the French Alps, is covered in snow. The height of this peak is 4,807 meters. On the southwest side of this peak there is a glacier named Glacier des Bossons. Suddenly there is a huge sound on this glacier. A Boeing 707 aircraft named Kanchenjunga crashes onto this glacier. This aircraft was Air India Flight 101. The aircraft was going from Mumbai to London via Delhi, Beirut, and Geneva. Bhabha was going to Vienna via Geneva.

There were 106 passengers and 11 crew members on board. All died. Among these 117 people was Dr. Homi Jahangir Bhabha, Chairman of India’s Atomic Energy Commission.

The aircraft, on its way from Bombay to London, had stopped at Delhi and Beirut. After leaving Beirut, the pilot was communicating with Geneva air traffic control. The Geneva air traffic controller had correctly determined the position of the aircraft and informed the pilot. But the pilot misunderstood this correction. He thought he had crossed the ridge extending to the peak of Mont Blanc and his aircraft was at a safe height to fly above the peak of Mont Blanc. With this misconception, he continued to descend the aircraft. The aircraft crashed into Mont Blanc.

There is another terrible aspect to this accident. In this same place, 16 years ago, on November 3, 1950, Air India Flight 245, a Lockheed Constellation aircraft named Malabar Princess, had crashed into Mont Blanc. In this accident, 48 passengers and crew died. The Kanchenjunga of 1966 crashed in almost the same place. Two plane crashes in the same place raise questions in people’s minds.

After the accident, rescue work started. But due to bad weather, rescue work was stopped the next day. The black box of the aircraft was never recovered. The glacier swallowed the wreckage of the aircraft. Very little was found at that time. But in the last decade, that glacier has started returning the wreckage.

In 2012, Alpine rescuer Arnaud Christmann found a wheel, a shoe, and a 46 year old Indian diplomatic pouch under the snow. These items appear to be wreckage from the Air India plane that crashed into Mont Blanc in 1966. This pouch contained Indian and English newspapers from 1966 and other documents labeled diplomatic mail. The Indian embassy collected this pouch and sent it to New Delhi.

What Did the Official Investigation Say?

The French inquiry commission resumed the investigation in September 1966. This commission submitted its report in March 1967. This report said the cause of the accident was the intense whiteout condition near the peak and a misunderstanding over phraseology between the Geneva air traffic controller and the pilot.

The commission further clarified that the pilot miscalculated the position of his aircraft with respect to Mont Blanc. The pilot continued to descend the aircraft with the mistaken belief that he had crossed the ridge leading to the peak and his aircraft was at a sufficient height to safely fly above the peak of Mont Blanc. The commission concluded that this accident was not due to a collision with another aircraft, but due to this miscalculation.

The French investigation also said that a receiver of the aircraft was not working. After leaving Beirut, this instrument defect was detected. The pilot continued to fly with this defective instrument. Because of this defective instrument, he could not correctly understand the information given by the Geneva controller.

Later, Indian and French investigators attributed the cause of this accident to bad weather, navigational error, and failure of communication with air traffic control. The aircraft missed its path and hit the mountain.

This is the official explanation. This explanation is simple. This explanation is logical. But this explanation does not answer all questions.

Questions That Remained

Even after the official report, some questions remain. These questions give birth to conspiracy theories.

  1. First question, about Bhabha’s ticket. Dr. Homi Bhabha had booked a flight the previous day for Geneva. But why he took Air India Flight 101 was never clarified. This last minute change seems suspicious to many. If he had gone on the previous flight, he would have survived.
  2. Second question, about the aircraft instrument. After leaving Beirut, a VOR receiver of the aircraft was not working. The pilot knew this defect. Yet he continued flying to Geneva. The question is, why was the pilot allowed to proceed with this defective aircraft? Was this defect really an accident, or was it deliberately created?
  3. Third question, about communication. The Geneva controller told the pilot there were 5 miles to Mont Blanc. The pilot replied Roger. Then he started descending from 19,000 feet. He hit Mont Blanc at a height of 15,585 feet. The question is, can this phraseology error really cause such a big mistake? Could this mistake not have been easily avoided?
  4. Fourth question, about timing. Bhabha’s death occurred just 13 days after the death of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastri died in Tashkent on January 11, 1966. Shastri’s wife claimed he was poisoned. But no medical investigation of his death was conducted. Two deaths, within a gap of 14 days, in the same year, the deaths of two important persons of India, make people think.
  5. Fifth question, about the diplomatic pouch. The diplomatic pouch found in 2012 contained newspapers from 1966. It is not certain whether this pouch was with Bhabha. But the discovery of this pouch brought this accident back into discussion.

Conspiracy Theory: CIA, Crowley, and Rocket Boys

The official explanation is not acceptable to many. Their argument is that Bhabha was the soul of India’s nuclear program. America did not want India to acquire nuclear power. So, America’s intelligence agency CIA removed Bhabha.

The biggest basis of this theory is a book published in 2008. The name of this book is “Conversations with the Crow”. The author of the book is Gregory Douglas. This book contains transcripts of conversations between journalist Gregory Douglas and former CIA officer Robert T. Crowley.

Crowley claims in this conversation that the CIA placed a bomb in the cargo hold of the aircraft. He says, “That one was dangerous, believe me. When a bomb went off in the cargo hold of his Boeing 707, he was flying to Vienna to stir up more trouble.”

Crowley further says, “We could have blown it up over Vienna, but we decided that the high mountains were much better for the bits and pieces to come down.” He says, “A possible death or two among mountain goats is much preferable than bringing down a huge plane right over a big city.”

Crowley also admits to Shastri’s death. He says, “We nailed Shastri as well. Shastri was a political type who started the program in the first place. Bhabha was a genius and he could get things done, so we aced both of them.”

After the publication of this book, there was widespread discussion in India. The conspiracy theory was shown in SonyLIV’s web series Rocket Boys. The director of this series, Abhay Pannu, says this theory is not completely fictional. He says, the CIA and KGB had placed people in the Prime Minister’s office. So it is not unusual to have such people on the board of the Atomic Energy Commission.

Supporters of this theory further say that Bhabha was carrying important secret documents to Vienna related to a mini nuclear power project in the Himalayas. After the accident, Pakistani diplomats first reached the crash site and took those documents. Although there is no proof of this claim.

Counter Argument: Why Accident Is More Likely

The conspiracy theory sounds thrilling. But this theory has no scientific or legal basis.

  • First, the author of Crowley’s book, Gregory Douglas, is not a reliable source. He has been described as a Nazi sympathizer, a conman, and a Holocaust denier. He has been accused of forgery. Even among conspiracy theorists, he is considered an outcast. The authenticity of his book is impossible to verify.
  • Second, the French inquiry commission, based on the wreckage, decided that the accident was due to miscalculation, not due to interference from another aircraft. The commission concluded that the commander had miscalculated his position with respect to Mont Blanc. No sign of explosives was found in this investigation.
  • Third, the alleged confession of CIA officer Robert Crowley has never been supported by any official or declassified document. The theory that the CIA was responsible for Bhabha’s death remains unproven.
  • Fourth, in 2017, Swiss mountaineer Daniel Roche found aircraft wreckage in the Alps. He believes Air India Flight 101 crashed after colliding with another aircraft. But the French inquiry report rejects this claim. The report says, based on the wreckage, the commission concluded that the accident was due to miscalculation.
  • Fifth, plane crashes on Mont Blanc are nothing new. In 1950, at the same place, Air India Flight 245 had crashed. This place is very dangerous for pilots. In whiteout conditions, mountain and sky look the same color. In this condition, miscalculating height is very easy.

Evidence Emerging from Inside the Glacier

The glacier of Mont Blanc is melting over time. Because of this melting, the wreckage of the 1966 accident is coming out again.

  • In 2012, mountaineers found a wheel, a shoe, and a diplomatic pouch. This pouch contained newspapers from 1966. This discovery was reported to the Indian embassy. The Indian embassy collected these items in Paris.
  • In 2017, a Swiss mountaineer named Daniel Roche found more wreckage. He also found human remains with this wreckage. He believes this accident did not happen only because of hitting the mountain. He thinks the aircraft collided with another aircraft.

But these discoveries do not prove the conspiracy theory. These discoveries only prove that the glacier is slowly revealing its secrets. These evidences could not change the conclusion of the French investigation.

In 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to France, inaugurated a memorial at a place called Nid d’Aigle at the foot of Mont Blanc. This memorial was built in honor of the victims of the two Air India accidents of 1950 and 1966. The name of Homi Bhabha is also there in this memorial. This memorial reminds us that not only one scientist died in this accident, 117 people also died.

What Impact Did It Have on India’s Nuclear Program?

Bhabha’s death was a huge blow for India’s nuclear program. Bhabha was the only person who could play all three roles together: scientist, administrator, and visionary. After his death, this program became directionless for a few years.

His successor, Homi Sethna, successfully completed India’s first nuclear bomb test in 1974. The name of this test was Smiling Buddha. This test proved how strong the foundation built by Bhabha was. Even without Bhabha, his institution carried his dream forward.

But historians say, if Bhabha had survived, India could have acquired nuclear power 5 years earlier. The thorium based reactor plan that Bhabha had made is still India’s long term goal.

After Bhabha’s death, questions arose about the safety of Indian scientists. Between 2009 and 2013, 11 nuclear scientists died under abnormal circumstances. This information was given by the Department of Atomic Energy in 2015 in response to an RTI. These deaths again provoked conspiracy theories. People started thinking that Indian scientists are being killed to stop the country’s progress.

Death of Homi Jahangir Bhabha’S Death Mystery – Boing-707

Conclusion

The mystery of Homi Jahangir Bhabha’s death teaches us that history is not always simple. The official investigation says it was an accident. The conspiracy theory says it was a murder. Where the truth lies, we do not know.

What we know is that on January 24, 1966, in the snow of Mont Blanc, India lost its brightest brain. This death brought grief to 117 families. This death pushed India’s nuclear dream back by a few years.

What we do not know is whether this death really happened due to a misunderstanding, or whether there was a hand of a foreign power behind it. Crowley’s book keeps this question alive. But the credibility of the author of this book is not beyond question. The French investigation has answered this question. But this answer has left questions in many minds.

As long as the glacier of Mont Blanc melts, new evidence of this accident will emerge. Maybe one day this glacier will return that black box. That black box may have the pilot’s last conversation recorded. That record may solve this 60 year old mystery.

Until that black box is found, every January 24, India’s scientists will offer flowers in front of Bhabha’s statue in Trombay. And they will say, “Sir, we are realizing your dream.” And this saying will continue from generation to generation. Because people always remember a hero who gave his life for the country. And Homi Bhabha is that hero.
