What is BRICS and how did it start?
The story began in 2001, in an office in London. Terence James O’Neill, a British economist at the American multinational investment bank Goldman Sachs, was writing a report. He saw that four countries — Brazil, Russia, India, and China — were growing at such a pace that by 2050 they would be driving the world economy. He jokingly named them BRIC. At that time, no one thought that these four letters would one day become a real alliance.
For the first time in 2006, at the initiative of Russia, the foreign ministers of the four countries sat at one table. The purpose is the same — Western countries, especially the G7, make decisions without listening to us. The IMF has a majority of votes, the head of the World Bank is always an American. Is this right?
On June 16, 2009, the first BRIC summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia. And in 2010, a historic turning point — South Africa joined. BRIC became BRICS with the representation of the African continent.
The main philosophy of this organization is very clear:
i. We are not against anyone, but we are not subordinate to anyone either.
ii. Developing countries need their own bank — that is why the New Development Bank (NDB) was created. [The agreement to establish this bank was signed at the sixth BRICS summit held in Fortaleza, Brazil in 2014 and the bank officially started its operations in 2015. Its headquarters is located in Shanghai, China. It also has regional offices in South Africa, Brazil, Russia and GIFT City, Gujarat, India.]
iii. We have to trade among ourselves without dollars.
The word that was once only in a report, today it is the name of the hopes and hopes of 11 countries, half of the world’s people.

Although the words may sound heavy, their meaning is very simple.
– Resilience: The ability to cope with shocks like Corona or war.
– Innovation: Spreading innovations like UPI, Digital India to all countries.
– Cooperation: Trade among ourselves by reducing dependence on the dollar.
– Sustainability: Development by saving the environment.
And India did not confine this chairmanship to just the Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi. This is India’s style.

In the last 8 months, more than 350 meetings have been held in more than 25 cities in India. Think — Finance Track Meeting was held in Gujarat; Tech and Startup Meeting was held in Bengaluru; Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting was held in Punjab; Health and Pharma Meeting was held in Hyderabad. That is, BRICS is no longer just a file in the Ministry of External Affairs, it is a festival in every city in India. And the final touch of this huge event — September 9-10, Mumbai. The last meeting of the Finance Minister and Central Bank Governors was held here. September 12th – The real game begins; Leaders’ Summit Day-1: In the morning, Prime Minister Modi welcomes the leaders of 11 countries. Then — i. Closed meeting: Only 11 leaders, no media, no officers. This is where open discussions are held on the Ukraine war, Gaza crisis, dollar vs local currency.
ii. Bharat Innovates exhibition: Modi shows the leaders around — how India went to the moon, how UPI works, how Digital India has transformed villages.
iii. Bilateral meetings in the evening: The whole world was looking at the Modi-Putin, Modi-Xi Jinping meetings.
September 13th – Announcement day; Leaders’ Summit Day-2: This day is the most important.
i. Open session: 11 members + partner countries + invited countries from Africa and Asia — everyone discusses together.
ii. New Delhi Declaration Adoption: This 140-paragraph document will be signed, which is the BRICS roadmap for the next one year.

Who’s who?; World heavyweights on the red carpet of Bharat Mandap: India is the host country of the 18th BRICS summit, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the current chairman of the summit. This year’s Delhi summit is being called a “mini G20″ in diplomatic circles, because of the guest list. Representatives of almost half the world’s population under one roof.

i. Vladimir Putin – Russia: Putin’s visit to India is the most talked about in the atmosphere of Western sanctions after the Ukraine war. The visit is confirmed. Big announcements can be made on India-Russia crude oil trade, rupee-ruble transactions and the S-400 defense deal.

viii. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan – United Arab Emirates (Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi): One of India’s biggest partners in energy and investment.
ix. Mauro Vieira – Brazil (Foreign Minister): Will be present as the representative of the President of Brazil. There is also a possibility of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia joining virtually.

On the afternoon of September 12, the most difficult task was — 11 countries, 11 interests, but one declaration. The “New Delhi Declaration” of 140 paragraphs was unanimously adopted. This document is the constitution of BRICS for the next 10 years. What is inside?
i. Global Governance Reform – The chair should be increased: BRICS clearly says — Why should the 5 permanent members of 1945 remain in the UN Security Council? Countries like India, Brazil, South Africa should be made permanent members. The voting rights of developing countries in the IMF and World Bank should be increased from 30% to 50%.
ii. Not war, but negotiations – International conflict: Concerns have been expressed about the Ukraine war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. However, without blaming anyone, it has been said — “Peace will come only through negotiations.” Calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.
iii. Tata to the dollar? – Trade and payments: This is the most explosive point. The announcement says — BRICS countries will start trading among themselves in local currencies. Oil will be bought and sold in Indian rupees, Chinese yuan, Russian rubles. For this, India has proposed to create an alternative payment system like UPI called BRICS Pay.
iv. Oil and Environment – Energy and Climate: Western countries say stop using oil. BRICS says — Developing countries should be allowed to use oil, but technology and money should also be provided for green energy.
v. People’s BRICS – Technology, Health, Agriculture: This time’s announcement includes not only politics, but also the voice of the people. BRICS Space Alliance, BRICS Vaccine Research Center and the decision to increase the cultivation of nutritious crops like millet in the agricultural sector.

Why is it important for India?
Many will ask — What is the benefit of India from BRICS? There is benefit and there is huge benefit.
i. Leadership opportunity: After G20, world leader again: India showed by holding the G20 summit in 2023 — we can lead the world. The BRICS chairmanship in 2026 further cemented that image.
