Letter to your friend describing your favourite book
Asansol, 05.09.2026
My dear Sujoy,
I hope you are well by the grace of God. I am well here too. In your last letter you asked me about my favourite book. Today I will tell you about my most favourite book which has changed my thinking.
My favourite book is “Wings of Fire” – an autobiography of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Missile Man of India and former President of India. It was written by Dr. Kalam with Arun Tiwari and published in 1999.
This book tells how a poor boy from a small boat family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu became a great scientist and President of India through hard work, honesty, determination and dream. He faced many hardships and failures in life but never gave up. He led the making of Indian missiles and Pokhran nuclear test.
It inspires me greatly. It teaches us to dream big – “Dream, Dream, Dream, Dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action” as Kalam said. It teaches honesty, hard work, perseverance and love for country. I learnt much about science, leadership and life from this book.
It is written in simple English and is very interesting. It has 50 lakhs readers. I think every student should read it once.
You should read it. I will lend you my copy when you come to Asansol. You will love it.

Letter to younger brother advising him to read books and avoid mobile
Asansol, 05.09.2026
My dear Bhai Sumit,
I hope you are keeping well. I am well here. I have heard from Maa that you spend 5-6 hours daily on mobile phone watching reels and playing games and you do not touch books except textbooks. I am very worried about you.
My dear brother, excess mobile use is very harmful. It damages eyes, causes headache, back pain, loss of concentration, lack of sleep and failure in studies. It makes you lazy and dull. It gives only temporary pleasure but destroys future.
Please avoid mobile and develop habit of reading good books. Books are our best and true friends. They never cheat us. They give us knowledge, wisdom, pleasure and guide us in loneliness. A good book is like a good friend.
Reading good books daily for one hour in library will improve your English vocabulary, spelling, writing skill and general knowledge which will help you a lot in Madhyamik exam. It will make you wise, confident and ideal person. Great men like Netaji, Gandhiji loved books.
So from tomorrow make daily habit of reading story books, science books, autobiography in our school library. Leave mobile only for study need.
I hope you will follow my advice and make parents proud.
Your loving elder brother, Amit Das Class X

Kolkata Book Fair Visited – A Wonderful Experience
- By Amit Das, Student Reporter, Class X, Asansol, 10th Feb 2026
Kolkata, 8th February 2026: Yesterday I visited the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair at Central Park Mela Ground, Salt Lake, Kolkata. It was a wonderful and memorable experience.
I went there with my father and friends at 4 p.m. The fair was huge and grand with more than 600 stalls of Indian and foreign publishers. Books of many subjects – story books, novels, science, history, geography, dictionary, comics and children books were beautifully displayed. The theme country this year was Germany.
Huge crowd was there, especially students, teachers and book lovers. Everyone was buying books with great interest. Seminars, book release functions and cultural programmes were held on the stage. Famous writers were giving autographs.
I visited many stalls and bought two books – “Wings of Fire” by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for Rs. 250 and an Oxford English-Bengali Dictionary for Rs. 400. I also got a free bookmark.
The fair showed me the importance of books in life. In the age of mobile and internet, seeing so many people love books was inspiring. It created reading habit among students. I enjoyed a lot and learnt that books are our best friends. I wish to visit every year.

Library Period in Our School – A Joyful Learning
- By Amit Das, Student Reporter, Class X, Asansol, 12th Aug 2026
Asansol, 12th August 2026: We have a very useful and interesting library period every Wednesday in our school Ramakrishna Vidyapith. I want to share my experience of last library period.
Our school has a rich library with more than 5000 books – story books, science books, history, geography, novels, dictionaries, autobiographies and daily newspapers. Last Wednesday, on 11th August, we Class X students went to library at 11 a.m. as per routine. Our librarian Sri S. Mukherjee and class teacher were there.
At first, librarian explained how to keep books and maintain silence. Then we were given books as per our choice. I took “Wings of Fire” while my friends took science encyclopedia and story books. We read silently for 40 minutes, took important notes in diary and enjoyed.
Teacher helped us choose good books and told us to avoid bad books. We can borrow one book for a week with library card and return it. This system helps poor students a lot.
Library period is very useful. It creates reading habit, improves vocabulary, general knowledge and concentration in this mobile age. We all wait eagerly for library period. Every school should have such period.

Importance of Good Books and Reading Habit
Books are our best and true friends. They give us knowledge, pleasure, wisdom and guidance without any demand and never cheat us. Good books make us wise, remove loneliness and help us travel world through reading.
Like good friends, good books should be chosen carefully. Bad books misguide us like bad friends. So students should choose good books – biography, science, story which give moral.
In this age of mobile addiction, reading habit is decreasing. We should develop daily habit of reading good books for one hour to become knowledgeable, ideal and successful in life.

10. Story Writing / Paragraph (10)
Story – Two cats and monkey[A]
Ans:
Two Cats and a Clever Monkey – Quarrel Loses Everything
Once upon a time, two cats lived in a village near Asansol. They were very greedy and always quarrelled. One day they were roaming in search of food. At last they found a big loaf of bread in a dustbin.
Both cats jumped on it and wanted to take whole loaf. They started fighting and quarrelling for equal share. One said “I found first, I will get more”, other said “No, I will get more”. Their quarrel became louder.
At that time a cunning monkey was sitting on a nearby tree and watching them. He wanted to eat the bread. He came down and said kindly, “Why are you quarrelling my friends? I will divide the bread equally for you. I have a balance.”
The foolish cats agreed and gave bread to monkey. The clever monkey broke the bread into two parts, but made one part bigger and one smaller purposely. He put them in balance and said, “Oh this part is bigger, I must make equal.” He took a big bite from bigger part and ate. Now other part became bigger. Again he ate from bigger part to make equal.
Like this, eating from bigger part again and again to make equal, the cunning monkey ate whole loaf of bread piece by piece. At last only two tiny crumbs remained. The two foolish cats looked at each other and understood they were cheated due to their quarrel. They went away hungry and sad.
Moral: Quarrel loses everything / Don’t quarrel / When fools quarrel, clever man enjoys / Unity is strength.

Paragraph on “Importance of Reading Books” (150 words)[B]
Ans:
Importance of Reading Books
Reading books is very important and essential for a good and successful life. Books are called our best and true friends. They give us knowledge, pleasure, wisdom and guidance without any selfishness and they never cheat us.
Good books make us wise, remove loneliness, depression and help us to travel whole world while sitting at home. By reading books we can know past history, present world and future science. Students learn new English vocabulary, spelling, writing skill and general knowledge which helps them in Madhyamik and competitive exams.
Library is called house of books where thousands of books are kept. In this age of mobile and social media addiction, reading habit is decreasing fast among students, which is very alarming. We must revive reading habit.
Great men like Rabindranath Tagore, Netaji, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam loved books and became great by reading. Reading books makes an ideal, confident and knowledgeable person. So we should make reading good books a daily habit at least for one hour and inspire others to read. ➣ Next set
